The Apostles’ Creed

The following is a creed that pretty much sums up the important points of exactly what (real) Christians affirm. I’ve got to specify “real” since there are some groups who claim to be Christian but deny (wholly or in part) the Biblical teachings that are summarized here.

Anyway, the Apostles’ Creed is a good reminder for Christians what they believe and not a bad place to look for non-Christians who want to know what, in a nutshell, a Christian is and believes.

I believe in God, the Father Almighty, the Creator of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived of the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried.

He descended into hell. The third day He arose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty, whence He shall come to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic** church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and life everlasting.

Amen.

** “Catholic” in this sense means the universal church (i.e. all the churches around the world that belong to Christ, collectively) and not the Roman Catholic system.
